Home Health, Hospice or Palliative Care?
Home health, hospice, and palliative care all offer support at home, but they have different goals. Home health aims at recovery and independence after an illness, injury, or surgery. It includes skilled services like nursing and therapy, and it usually lasts for a short time, following a doctor's treatment plan. Hospice is for patients who have a life expectancy of six months or less when curing the illness is no longer the goal. Its focus is on providing comfort, dignity, and quality of life at the end of life. Palliative care can start at any stage of a serious illness, even along with treatments aimed at curing the disease. It emphasizes relief from symptoms, emotional support, and improving the quality of life for both the patient and their family.

Is this covered by my insurance?
When patients ask if services are covered by insurance, the honest answer is usually yes, if the patient meets the eligibility rules and the care is medically necessary with a physician’s order. Most insurance plans, including Medicare, cover home health, hospice, and palliative care when the proper paperwork is submitted. However, some private insurers and Medicare Advantage plans may need prior approval before services start. Coverage depends on having complete supporting documents, a valid physician order, and meeting each payer’s requirements.
How long can I receive service for?
Home health: You can receive this service if you are homebound, have a skilled medical need, and your doctor confirms that the care is helping you meet your goals. Reviews happen every 60 days.
Hospice: You qualify for this if your prognosis is six months or less. Certification is renewed regularly, every 60 or 90 days, as long as your condition still meets the criteria.
Palliative care: There is no fixed time limit for this. It can be given at any stage of a serious illness and may last for months or years, even while you are receiving treatments to improve or cure your condition.
